The quintessential game of Croquet - played for centuries by Kings and Queens will be seen throughout the Summer in a small North Cornwall village on a lawn boasting some of the most stunning and spectacular coastal views in the county.

Over several weeks leading up to the competition, the lawn to be used in the tournament, is being carefully manicured and prepared, to ensure the first season of  “The Open St Gennys Croquet Cup”  is a success.

In support of St Gennys Church and Cornwall Hospice Care, the stroke play tournament’s main aim for participants and spectators is to have fun; the serious diversion comes in the form of proper Cornish cream teas with clotted cream from a splendid local herd of Jersey Cows. It is also planned to serve seafood lunches and suppers with local crab and lobster.

Organiser David George Richardson said: “People from far and wide should come and enjoy this wonderful English tradition, while partaking in a tipple or two with their meals - bubbly certainly suits the location and event! Facing west we have the most fantastic and romantic sunsets.

“For those who understand the game”… there will be entries of two, three or four ball players in a three round stroke play tournament the lowest score secures The Cup. Lowest single round score takes away The Salver. The playing partner marks their opponents card.

Half the proceeds from the event will be donated to Cornwall Hospice Care, which provides specialist medical care to patients in the County who have a life-limiting condition and gives practical, emotional and spiritual support to them, and their loved ones. It costs more than £5 million annually - equivalent to £11 a minute - to run the service and around 80 pence in every pound has to be met from voluntary income.

The other benefactor will be St Gennys Church, which has one of the most ancient towers in Cornwall, a splendid setting, recorded by Alan Titchmarsh for the scenery and variety of lichen and wild flowers.
